		Linux Gaming

I am an avid game player. I have played video games since their birth. As such, you would
expect me to get into gaming under Linux.

There is an awesome gaming scene on Linux. Linux may not have the commercial support of other
OSes, but as far as independent developers are concerned Linux support is second to none.

There are some issues with gaming under Linux which must be recognized. For one, Linux uses XFree86 for its layer between graphic hardware and the UI. XFree86
does cause some latency concerns, and support for graphic hardware can (depending on the hardware) be spotty.
3D hardware acceleration is still not very easy to setup (with nVidia cards almost being an exception to
that rule). Plus, there are some small latency issues in the kernel. (Update 2002-03-16: Actually
most of the latency issues have been resolved with Robert
Love's preemptable kernel and lock-breaking patches! Patch them into your 2.4 kernel, or wait for 2.6,
where it will be an official part of the Linux kernel!)

However, these issues can be small (with proper setup & prevention), and will someday be resolved
altogether. For the vast majority of game players, once the games get installed, they will probably not
see any noticable difference between Linux gaming and gaming on other OSes.

I'd like to eventually do some game reviews here... but that's for another day ;-)
